While constitutional and legal protection exists in South Africa for gay and lesbian people, many gays and lesbians still experience victimisation and many are unaware of their rights or are afraid to put them into practice. This resource aims to assist service providers to ensure that gays and lesbians receive appropriate and non-discriminatory services according to the rights afforded to them by the constitutional and legal framework of South Africa. It is intended to increase understanding of the issues facing lesbian and gay people in relation to service provision in South Africa; inform service providers of the relevant policy framework that guides the management of lesbian and gay clients; increase awareness of the links between service provision and the marginalisation, exclusion and discrimination of lesbian and gay people; suggest ways to make services lesbian and gay friendly; de-stigmatise lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex (LGBTI) issues; and provide referral points for service providers.
